We are going to unplug this weekend and spend as much time outside as we can. One way to get children to play outside for longer is to create a loose parts area in your backyard.
Loose parts play is a type of play that supports innovation, divergent thinking, problem solving and unlimited exploration. Loose parts are materials with no specific set of directions that can be used alone, taken apart or combined with other materials to become something new.
This type of play ignites the creative spirit, artistic soul and inventor’s mind. When engaging with loose parts play, you will find that children ask you more questions about how things in the world work than in any other type of lesson. The imagination is bought to life, theories can be explored and worlds are re-imagined.
Start by going for a walk and collecting natural items such as rocks and sticks and pinecones or gather items around the house that can be used outdoors.
